Married couples...do you try to spend time and energy equally on both of your families?

My husband's family was quite offended at the wedding when my mother was treating it like her wedding and somewhat like my wedding, but didn't include my husband or his family in any real way. My sister thought this was only normal since my mother paid for the wedding, although I was quite enraged by the situation. Also, my husband and I do our best to spend equal time with both families and my husband's family would be offended if we moved to the same town as my family because then we wouldn't get equal time (we live pretty far away from both). My husband's family is very sentimental and wants everything to be fair, while mine family is not so much like that. My sister thinks my husband's family is crazy...a fact which enraged my husband the other night. How do most couples deal with their families?
