Help me identify an eye tag growth?

My husband has a small growth at the bottom of his iris. It recurs every couple of months. He says it feels like a piece of sand in his eye. It comes off with a little coaxing, but keeps coming back. The optometrist said not to worry about it, but it's annoying to him. I've searched the net, but can't find anything that sounds right... any ideas?
