Why do muslims say islam is peace?

if they say death penalty for someone who has gay , according to their book, Allah is merciful and Allah send you hell or heaven but where is their book to say Kill the gay ppl? if islam is peace? how can you explain there are many conflicts in the name of Allah in the middle east?
